      email:  lclements@generals.ws

    4. Make an individual folder for each application.  (Consider creating color-coded files.)

    5. Make a photocopy of each application to use as a rough draft.  Do not write on the original until you are absolutely sure of what you want to say.

    6. Separate the different parts of the application.  Complete the required information on the Secondary School Report, the Mid-Year Report, and the Teacher Evaluations before giving them to the counselors and teachers.  Be sure to sign the forms and the waiver agreement.

    7. Submit the Secondary School Report and the Mid-year Report to the College Counseling office and the Teacher Recommendation to the appropriate teacher as soon as possible and no later than the counselor's deadlines.  Follow the instructions under "letters of Recommendation" for submitting these to your teachers.  Teachers should be asked to return their recommendations to the college counseling office.  Be sure to give them the due date and to thank them.

    8. Be sure to sign the application and include the application fee.

    9. Photocopy completed application, essay, and application fee check for your files.

    10. If using the Common Application, keep the original and submit copies to all schools that will accept the common application.  Complete and return all supplementary forms required.

    11. Some college applications have a Part 1 that must be submitted to get the remainder of the application (Parts 2, 3).  Make a copy of your Part 1 application and send it, along with your application fee, as early as possible.

    12. You may apply on-line to many colleges.  Applications may be downloaded from the college's website.  Keep a "hard copy" of everything you send.

    13. Seek advice.  Before completing the original form, submit a practice copy to parents, a teacher, or a counselor to proofread for errors.

    14. Type or neatly print your application in black ink.  Remember your application is speaking for you - make it impressive.

    15. A transcript will be sent with the application.  A seven-semester transcript will be sent after the first semester.  Some colleges have a Mid-Year Report to be filed with the seven-semester transcript.  This form should be given to the college counselor.  Final transcripts will be sent for all students after graduation to the schools in which the students will enroll.

    16. Submit test scores directly from the testing agencies by the required dates.

    17. If you are applying to in-state universities that do not require recommendations, you may complete and mail your application; then go to the counselors' office and sign a request that your transcript be sent to the college.  If you apply online, notify the counseling office to send your transcript after you have submitted the application.  Print a copy to keep for your files.

    Scholarship and Financial Aid Information
Students may find scholarship information through the counseling office, the local library, in the student financial aid office of colleges, by contacting local civic, social and religious organizations as well as recommended internet sights.  It is important to keep a folder with information secured throughout the junior and senior year

A strong academic record and high ACT and/or SAT scores will be the biggest assets in securing a scholarship, but many additional awards are available for specific talents and others are awarded on a need-basis.

The very best way for students to know about all the available scholarships at a particular college or university is to request information directly from the Office of Admissions and/or Financial Aid.  Ask whether applicants for admissions are considered for any and all scholarships, or if there are separate application forms to be completed and submitted.

FAFSA - Free application for Federal Student Aid - This is for federal aid and is based on parents' income.  Many colleges use this as a basis for their own financial aid.  This application must be filled out after taxes are done.  You may apply online at www.fafsa.ed.gov or get an application in the counselor's office.
