Sixth grade art teams built Towers of Paper while focusing on skills such as communication, negotiation, problem-solving, and team-building techniques.
Each team of five students was given a stack of newspapers and a roll of masking tape, and they were instructed to build a tower that 1) used only newspaper and tape; 2) was free standing; and 3) was at least as tall as Richard Word---the tallest student in the class!

Each team showed expertise in one area or another, and a critique session at the end of the session helped to identify keys to success and areas that needed  improvement.

Today's high-performance organizations require team players who have a grasp on the skills listed above. Students must be prepared to be flexible, be adaptable, and be able to work well with others in order to further their corporate goals and be successful.

    Middle School Art

    Art classes are
offered as an enrichment to Middle School students. All sixth grade students attend art class for a period of twelve weeks in a rotation with two other enrichment activities. Seventh and eighth grade students have the opportunity to enroll in visual art classes, opting for classes 2 or 5 days per week. These art students enjoy frequent field trips to the local art gallery, as well as an annual visit to the Mississippi Museum of Art in Jackson or the Brooks Museum in Memphis. Students are exposed to a wide variety of art media, including the use of a Conrad etching press. All art students participate in the biennial fine arts exhibit, which is a celebration of the creative spirit among students, alumni, and friends of the school. Each year, students are encouraged to participate in local and state art contests and are often recognized for their superior talent.
